My name is Montez Haywood. I am currently running for the Open City Council seat in District 8. I’m the product of a union household and understand the nature of being saved by the UAW. I was born in Flint, Michigan, and moved to Antion Tennessee. I played college football and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University before coming to New England for law school, where I attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. After law school, I worked for a year and a half at a small, private firm on the south coast of Massachusetts, and I've been a prosecutor ever since. As a prosecutor, I’ve spent the lion’s share of my career focusing on criminal violence in the city of Boston. I have also volunteered extensively, aiding those burdened by homelessness and food insecurity. I currently serve on the board of the Esplanade Association. Prior to that, I was a board member at Project Right in Greater Growth Hall.
Policies:
Housing
- Convert empty office space into housing using tax credits.
- Build more middle income housing in the city so that, as young people become professionals and build their families, we can encourage them to stay.
- Encourage good, hard-working people to stay in the city through affordable rates and the affordable housing program, working to get close to 20% affordable housing within the city. - Ensure that our elderly are housed and food secure through the affordable housing program. - Make it sustainable for people to be able to live in our city by encouraging wage increases and wage growth, as opposed to the Mayor’s proposed rent-control policies.
Education
- Transition back to a fully elected school board to make our public school system directly accountable to its people, the students, the parents, and to our city.
- Create walking zones in District Bay, so students do not have to be bussed for extended periods of time.
- Rethink our exam policies, using the fully elected school board to represent what the people want. Economy/Jobs
- Take initiative to encourage economic growth as inflation increases.
- Diversify the city’s tax base by not relying so heavily on the real estate program. - Encourage businesses to have more outdoor patio space, as the city gets a small tax on every meal that is served that way.
- Ensure that people working for the city of Boston are paid enough to afford an apartment in the city.
- Work to get the lowest-paid employees in the city to market wage or about $25 an hour, where working a one job 40 hours a week allows them to afford an apartment in the city.
Public Safety
- Oppose the city’s plan to cut the police budget by tens of millions of dollars. - Recruit more officers, including additional training officers and community officers. - Create walking beats across the district on every street, making sure every person in our
neighborhood understands and knows our police officers, as we would continue to rebuild those relationships.
Public Health
- Purchase a cruise ship and create a floating hospital for the city that would treat people suffering from mental illness or substance abuse. This would get these people off the streets, and offer them an option other than jail while making the streets safer.
- Provide resources beyond a blanket and a pad for those on the street, including a space to have access to clean drinking water, access to a bathroom, and access to a place where they can be protected from the sun.
Environment
- Work on climate resiliency to protect people who are working outside, walking outside and commuting in the city during heat waves.
- Improve how we generate electricity, making larger buildings more efficient. - Get everyone in the city into the Clean Energy Program, focusing on people who didn’t have the opportunity to opt-into the program originally.
- Use both solar power and the ocean to generate power where applicable.
City Maintenance
- Oppose the building of a bike lane on Charles Street, as it doesn’t make sense safety-wise or aesthetically to do so.
- Oppose the extension of the bike lane to 100 Beacon Street, as it is the exit to Searle Drive. - Create bike lanes that give bikers a connected, contiguous route that does not affect cars or pedestrians and that keeps everybody separate and safe.
- Create a city-wide composting program.
- Negotiate with trash collectors to improve pick-up times and reduce the time garbage sits on the street.
- Enforce regulations on the types of trash bags the city uses, in order to prevent pests from ripping into the trash bags.
- Focus on improving the trash emptying system, as it is presently inadequate. - Add transparency to the city’s plans to resurface the roads.
If we join together and make our voices heard, we can fight for the change we want to see!
